There is no single "best" safari country in Africa — only the best country for what you specifically want to see and do. Kenya and Tanzania offer the classic savannah Big Five experience; Uganda and Rwanda offer gorilla trekking and primate encounters that feel nothing like a traditional game drive. Here is how the four East African countries compare.
Kenya
Kenya is the entry point for most first-time safari travellers, and for good reason. The Masai Mara is one of the most wildlife-dense parks in Africa, English is widely spoken, infrastructure is excellent, and the country hosts the most famous chapter of the Great Migration. Park fees are lower than Tanzania, drives from Nairobi are manageable, and the variety of landscapes — from the Mara plains to Amboseli's elephants to the red-dust north of Samburu — gives even a short trip genuine range.
Best for: First safaris, big cats, the Great Migration, family trips, mixed itineraries.
Tanzania
Tanzania is larger, wilder and more varied than Kenya. The Serengeti is bigger than the Masai Mara, Ngorongoro Crater is unlike anywhere else on Earth, and the southern parks — Ruaha, Selous — offer genuine wilderness almost entirely free of other vehicles. Park fees are higher and logistics more complex, but the scale of the experience reflects it. Add Zanzibar as a beach extension and Tanzania becomes a complete holiday in a single country.
Best for: Serious wildlife travellers, photographers, the full migration circuit, beach extensions.
Uganda
Uganda is, above all, a gorilla trekking destination. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest holds more than half the world's mountain gorillas across four trekking sectors, and permits cost $800 — roughly half what Rwanda charges. Beyond gorillas, Queen Elizabeth National Park has tree-climbing lions, Murchison Falls is one of Africa's most dramatic landscapes, and Kidepo Valley is one of its most remote. Uganda rewards travellers who look beyond the obvious.
Best for: Gorilla trekking, primate encounters, value-focused itineraries, off-the-beaten-track wildlife.
Rwanda
Rwanda is compact, safe and polished. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is the premium version of the experience — $1,500 permits, small groups, exceptional lodge standards, and a country so well-organised that logistics feel effortless. Add Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee trekking and Akagera for Big Five game drives and you have three distinct ecosystems within a few hours of Kigali.
Best for: Luxury gorilla trekking, travellers who want everything to run perfectly, short trips from Kigali.
